The Island Menu from Kefalonia

Ithaca in 20 minutes, Zakynthos and Lefkada as bigger days, the Echinades by excursion boat - ranked by effort-to-reward, with the crossings that actually run.

Updated August 2026

Kefalonia sits in the Ionian’s best neighborhood. Here is the menu, ranked the only honest way: by what a day’s effort buys.

1. Ithaca - the obvious winner

Twenty to thirty minutes across, departures from four different points, and a greatest-hits list - Vathy, Gidaki, Kioni - that fits one day without sprinting. No other island on this list comes close on effort-to-reward; it’s this site’s whole subject for a reason.

2. Zakynthos - the spectacle day

South of Kefalonia, home of Navagio shipwreck beach and the blue caves. Summer excursion boats run from Pessada and the south coast; the day is long and the sights are the Ionian’s most photographed. The honest caveat: Navagio viewings are often from the water at busy anchorages - spectacular, and shared with everyone else who had the same idea.

3. Lefkada - the connected north

Reached via the Fiskardo corner of Kefalonia in summer, when a seasonal service extends the Ionian ferry web northward. Better as an overnight than a day-sprint; its west-coast beaches (Porto Katsiki, Egremni) deserve unhurried hours.

4. The Echinades and the small stuff

The scatter of islets toward the mainland - excursion-boat territory, swim-and-taverna days without a headline monument. Good second-week material once the big three are banked.

The pattern is plain: distance taxes every option except the first. Ithaca’s channel is the region’s kindest crossing, and the full comparison prices every way across it.
