Three formats, one island. The right one is mostly decided by where you wake up.

Format one: the cruise (the default)

Board at an east-coast port, spend the day in Ithaca’s coves with swim stops, get harbor time in Vathy or Kioni, sail home. The Sami departure ($75, 4.5/5) is the featured pick - the shortest sea leg buys the most island time. Agia Effimia and Poros run their own versions at the same price point with the same shape. Cruises own the thing DIY can’t easily reach: Gidaki beach, boat-or-trail only, is a scheduled stop rather than a hike.

Format two: the bus-and-boat (the far-coast answer)

Staying in Skala, Argostoli or Lassi puts an hour of driving between you and any east-coast quay - the exact gap the full-day bus tour closes with hotel-area pickup. It carries this route’s biggest review base (4.6/5 across 139 bookings, $70) precisely because most visitors stay on those far coasts. The trade is the fixed loop: the bus’s itinerary, not yours. Format three: DIY on the ferry

The $6 crossing plus your own plan. Cheapest by an order of magnitude, most flexible, and the only format that lets you stay for the evening light - but you inherit the Pisaetos quay problem and the timetable. Best with a hire car waiting or a night booked in Vathy.

The two-line verdict

Near an east-coast port: cruise. Far coast: bus tour. Island collector with a car or a bed on Ithaca: ferry. All three run free cancellation, so book the format now and re-litigate the weather later.
